College Connection Mentors

Make a DIFFERENCE!

Summer has flown by, and at Fuse Duluth the time has come to start thinking about the upcoming school year.

Did you know that 1 out of every 4.5 people in our community is a college student? After graduation, thousands of students leave the area, feeling disconnected from the business community. Your work as a volunteer mentor through College Connection is helping to connect students with businesses, opportunities, and the greater community.

For the first time in the history of our program, we have FOUR schools--UMD, CSS, DBU, and LSC-- on board with College Connection! Our program still aims to connect local profesionals and business-people with college students from around the community in order to help the student accomplish several goals, including the following:

-Establish networking connections in the community which may help them break into the job market of their choosing.
-Help the student to define and being to achieve a set of realistic goals.
-Listen to the student and discover their needs from the program (each student is different)
-Help to build new friendships among the mentors and students.

What does it take? Enthusiasm!! A willingness to share your professional expertise! An interest in helping grow young talent!

What would you be doing?

You would help your student set goals so you are both on the same page. Some activities could include: Lunch/coffee meetings, informational interviews for mentees with mentors' associates, job shadowing experiences, advice, wisdom and knowledge-sharing.

We want you to become a mentor today! If you are interested, or you have questions contact one of the following:

Lara Wilkinson, Director of Fuse at 740-3754 or lwilkinson@duluthchamber.com
Tad Johnson, College Connection Action Team Chair at tadulous@gmail.com

Kimberly C. Keuning-President-Out There Advertising, Inc
Kim started Out There Advertising in 1997, after gaining national and international experience and advertising knowledge during a successful 18-year advertising account management career in Los Angeles. Agency experience included BBDO, McCann-Erickson and JW Thompson; and client experience covered the airline, fast food, packaged goods and retail segments. For the past 13 years Kim has led the staffers at Out There Advertising as they have created memorable, effective and award-winning advertising for the agency's clients.
John Keuning-Creative Director-Out There Advertising, Inc.
As far back as he can remember, John's interest has been in the arts. Through grade school, John won numerous awards for his talents. In the fourth grade for example, first place in a drawing contest won him an Eskimo Pie. After earning a BFA from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, John's talents landed at McCann-Erickson and JWT in Los Angeles. There he handled the creative on accounts such as Lockheed, Coca-Cola, Hilton Hotels, Mexicana Airlines and Baskin-Robbins 31 Flavors to name a few. He started in advertising as a Jr. Art Director. Central to his philosophy of producing distinctive, effective creative is to develop a "brand voice" for every client, and maintain that personality-driven voice to build the brand. Oh, and to make a mean cup of Joe.

Dana Kazel-Account Exective/Copywriter-Out There Advertising, Inc.
Dana Kazel loves having a job where she can somewhat justify the amount of time she spends on Facebook. As an Account Executive and Copywriter at Out There Advertising since 2003, she helps create marketing strategies using both traditional and social media for a wide-spectrum of clients in the medical, B2B, environmental, restaurant and education industries, plus several non-profits. As a former journalist, she's fascinated by social media's impact on both the news media and their audiences. Dana was the fourth person from her high school class to join Facebook. (At last count, that number had risen to 242.) Away from work, she's been blogging for more than two years about the adorable antics of her kids, and dreams of the day the Blogger Team will recognize hers as the blog of note.
Melissa D'Aloia-Account Executive-Out There Advertising, Inc.
Melissa, a self-proclaimed social media addict, has worked in marketing and advertising for seven years. She joined Out There Advertising as an Account Executive in 2005 and has been developing innovative marketing strategies for clients in both B2C and B2B sectors across a variety of industries ever since.
