College Connection Mentors
Summer has flown by, and at Fuse Duluth the time has come to start thinking about the upcoming school year.
Did you know that 1 out of every 4.5 people in our community is a college student? After graduation, thousands of students leave the area, feeling disconnected from the business community. Your work as a volunteer mentor through College Connection is helping to connect students with businesses, opportunities, and the greater community.
For the first time in the history of our program, we have FOUR schools--UMD, CSS, DBU, and LSC-- on board with College Connection! Our program still aims to connect local profesionals and business-people with college students from around the community in order to help the student accomplish several goals, including the following:
-Establish networking connections in the community which may help them break into the job market of their choosing.
-Help the student to define and being to achieve a set of realistic goals.
-Listen to the student and discover their needs from the program (each student is different)
-Help to build new friendships among the mentors and students.
What does it take? Enthusiasm!! A willingness to share your professional expertise! An interest in helping grow young talent!
What would you be doing?
You would help your student set goals so you are both on the same page. Some activities could include: Lunch/coffee meetings, informational interviews for mentees with mentors' associates, job shadowing experiences, advice, wisdom and knowledge-sharing.
We want you to become a mentor today! If you are interested, or you have questions contact one of the following:
Lara Wilkinson, Director of Fuse at 740-3754 or lwilkinson@duluthchamber.com
Tad Johnson, College Connection Action Team Chair at tadulous@gmail.com
